The big news for this year’s gathering was the weather. No triple digits! Cool mornings in the 60’s, a constant breeze all day long, and highs in the mid-90’s. My drive over Thursday morning on rural Kansas back roads was almost spiritual.
By the time I rolled into town, John and Jay had already staked out a shady spot by the pool, across the main road from the swap meet. We had dinner that evening with Mary, their mom, at Chuck’s Bar. My pal Mark Bracewell drove over Friday to enter a few model cars in Saturday’s contest. The Morrison brothers, Rich and Roger, dropped by to socialize. Rich had his ’58 Mercedes 220 La Carrera Panamericana coupe. Roger drove his wife’s post-war Ford woodie.
On Saturday, Jay’s son Ezra, along with his kids, made the trip from Hayes to spend time with dad and Uncle John.
The Saturday late afternoon drive home was of course warmer yet enjoyable.
